Based on extensive research, Eric Schumacher’s sculptural installations reflect his interest in public space and in how humans act in it. Taking an approach that combines diligence and technical skill with spontaneity and humor, he works with a surprisingly broad range of objects he finds in the streets, including handmade and mass-produced materials like cardboard, polystyrene, paper, and fiberboard. The direct linkage between material premises and conceptual idea is fundamental to Schumacher’s practice of sculptural assemblage, which rests on a dynamic interplay between constructive and degenerative forces. His sculptural strategy resists specific representation or ideology in favor of an experimental process that transmutes familiar forms into enigmatic constructions.

The monograph What Condition Our Condition Is In documents Eric Schumacher’s output of the past fifteen years and offers personal insights into his studio and creative processes. With an essay by Rodney LaTourelle.

Eric Schumacher was born in 1985 in Esch/Alzette, Luxembourg. He lives and works in Edinburgh, Scotland and Luxembourg. After studying art in Brussels, he obtained a BA in sculpture from Edinburgh College of Art and an MA entitled 'Interdisziplinäres Raumlabor' from the Technische Universität Berlin. His work has been shown in various solo and group exhibitions in museums and art centres throughout Europe.
